Pankow

Pankow – Let’s have a walking tour off the beaten tracks. Go for a visit to the district of Pankow. North to the city centre you will find a quiet but nevertheless interesting neighbourhood. It once was the residence of a rejected queen. Since three years her former palace, Schloss Schönhausen, is again open to the public. No public was ever allowed in the neighbouring area, the so called “small city” (“Städtchen”). That was where the former East Germany’s communist bigwigs lived cordoned off to better rule the rest of the working population. Exclusion and displacement by gentrification is a current fear of many old-established inhabitants due to the fact that the district is getting more and more trendy. Countless luxury residential building projects give evidence for this.
